Fair Game of Chance

by Doré

Many years ago I attended a festival on the bench lands of the San Lorenzo river. A friend asked how the day had progressed, and I laughed, "It was FAIR! What did you expect?" And so, a rather trivial pun has become a title for artwork. Who wouda guessed?

Actually, the original title was about Luck and Good Fortune--but I guess "good" led me too easily to "fair." Most importantly in games of chance is the idea that one is entitled to an even-handed opportunty. Don't you wonder when a contest is held and the announcer states "Good luck to each and everyone"--which isn't possible! (Title awaiting another artwork?)

Central in this design is one of my plywood scraps, painted with six colours, and featuring a bold arrow pointing to the upper left corner. Above this is a crumpled white metal curtain with a rusty handle. It has something to do with presentation of choice and luck and gambling--but I'm not sure what. Care to make a wager?
