Recalling Primal Memories

by Doré

What does the title mean? I'm not at all sure. Somehow it "fell" into place as the work completed.

The title refers to the "scraper" (that central object we see)--a white disk with 6 dark holes and a central stem, from which flares 6 whisks of wire. If only it could be set in motion, surely it represents an attempt to clear out the cobwebs of our past! Maybe, however, such action is part of our misbegotten memories.

This wire brush sits well on a large circular grill of parallel straight ribs. The background green was already chosen, but the metal slab--on the left edge--was a fortuitous "volunteer" (as was the painted plywood board atop it). The composition embraces elements of metal, wood, clay, paint & roofing composition.

Confession time: some of my assemblages do not start with a predetermined idea--not even a sketch. I often work from intriguing shapes, balanced (but not static) placement and harmonious colour. Titles complete the finished presentation.
